Ernst I was born on September 16th 1826 and ruled Saxe-Altenburg from August 3rd 1853 until his death.
The family were formally called Sachsen Hildburghausen and it's orgin is from 1482 when the separation of the Ernestine and Albertine parts of the
Saxony line took place. Up until 1826 Saxe-Altenburg formed part of Saxe-Gotha when there was an exchange of territories among the Saxon princes.
The duke has a civil list of 143,000 thalers accounting for about one sixth of the revenue of the whole country (of about 509 square miles).
